Our Values

Teaching British Values

The definition of British Values set out by the Government in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and added to OFSTED inspection guidance in July 2014.

‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote fundamental British Values of democracy, the role of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs’

At Cambridge Nursery School these values are promoted regularly through high quality teaching, a range of courses and positive behaviour policies.

So how does this happen today?

Democracy

We listen to the children and parents/carers and mould out services to meet their needs. We collect views in a range of ways from questionnaires to a whisper wall in the toilet. We decide shared rules and ensure all staff are consistent in their use. For example, ‘We always use kind hands with each other’.

The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce out high expectations of the children. The children are taught the value and reasons behind our expectations and we reward the children for good behaviour and attitudes, i.e stickers, star of the day/week. 100% attendance.

Individual liberty

Within our school the children are encouraged to make choices knowing they are in a safe and supportive environment. We provide an enabling environment and effective teaching to allow children to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms.

Mutual Respect

The children are taught to care, share and listen to others. They learn that good behaviour is rewarded. All staff have high expectations of behaviour and we believe that this is a strength of the school.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

As one of the first school’s to establish an international group we are extremely fortunate that the increase in languages, faiths and cultures is further enhancing, not only our curriculum but support for families through peer support.

We are a non-denominational school but we do celebrate and recognise a diverse range of religions. Staff ensure that parents are involved in all our celebrations and we are often supported in our knowledge and development by them.
At Cambridge we actively challenge children, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views.
